European Vacation

London, England is the perfect city for a red head doll. Wonder if my English ancestors stood in this river too?
Star has always had a love for Swedes, so our visit to Göteborg Sweden was incredible.As world travelers, one must always be willing to get their feet wet.

Christmas 2010

There was something different about this Christmas. I bought decorations, had lights strung up around the house and even had a tree. The season had not meant anything to me in decades, but this year was different. Two twin boys reminded me of the excitement there was in this time of year.Christmas came and went too fast. Wish I could relive it again and again. I suppose we should stop telling the kids "Santa is watching", but if it keeps on working . . .

My Adventure

The last 4 months have brought three new people into my life. My life now is about family, and all the free time is given to two wonderful boys. The same two I have been sharing in my previous blogs. I haven't given up on the dolls, but finding time to create has been difficult.

My energy has been put into developing dolls that I can one day have licensed. Georgia and Star have been transformed from Art Dolls to dolls that can be played with. I will now release them into the arms of two, 6 year old boys who have adored them from afar. They have been waiting with wide eyes watching me make their new playmates.
So I hope to make a few to sell and my hopes are even bigger for the possibilities of a future where thousands of kids will have the chance to create their own adventures with Georgia and Star.

Wasington Square Park, Mobile, Al.In one of Mobile's oldest neighborhoods sits this wonderful square. It is an incredible place to play among some old giant trees.The limbs reach to the ground, inviting us to climb.We all had a great morning playing in one of the prettiest places on earth.

Fountains to Play in

Mobile, Al. USA
Mobile is a mix of French, Spanish, Creole, Catholic, British and African heritages, distinguishing it from all other cities in the state of Alabama. Mobile is the birthplace of Mardi Gras in the United States and has the oldest celebration, dating to the early 1700s. If you love the old Antebellum and Southern architecture, this is the city to visit. Today we met up with our two friends Caleb and Caden. We played in the fountain at Cathedral Square in downtown Mobile.
Summer is hot here, and we all found this to be a great way to cool off our front and back sides. Got to love kids . . .

Wild, Rugged West

New Mexico, USAThere is something different to the way everything looks out west. The sky is different, the terrain is different, the air is different. Never saw a sunset as beautiful as the ones in New Mexico, just outside of Santa Fe.
No, we did not climb the rock, we just sat around and watched the day go by. Very peaceful place and definitely 'The Land of Enchantment'

New Orleans, Louisiana, USAHere we are in what is referred to as the most unique city in America because of its distinctive French Creole architecture and its multi-lingual culture and traditions.The French Quarter is a great place to walk around. A mixture of businesses and residences. A fascinating glimpse into another time.One thing about The Quarter, no one yells at me to 'get out of the road'.Because New Orleans sits near sea level, the graves are above ground and the cemeteries, with its mausoleums, look much like The Quarter.
They are another version of the city, except these are for the dead.

Stonhenge is a very peaceful and melancholy place. A must visit to watch a Soltice sunrise.Built in several phases between 3,000 and 1,600 BC, Stonhenge is an amazing feat of engineering that remains a mystery.I hope the mystery is never solved. I mean if it was proven that a giant alien crane, that was able to reach across hundreds of miles, moved these stones from there to here, then the fascination with Stonehenge would be replaced with one for the FREAKING GIANT ALIEN CRANE . . .

Got Big Dreams

and I have talent and maybe the two meet here. Out of the past my dolls Georgia and Star have inspired me to think about a larger market. The way to get to this market is through licensing my art.My ideas started after I was clipping this doll 'Georgia' out of a photo to place on a background. Started thinking about how appealing she might be on all sorts of products aimed at little girls.

Georgia and Star share the spirit of being tomboys and so they could appeal to all girls. I would love to hear your thoughts. I am just in the beginning stages of this and I am very excited.

I do love the complicated journey. My life and my art reflect this fact. To take the easy way out means to lose much experience and knowledge. I've needed all the do overs. I needed to travel the same road many times to learn its lessons.I don't do easy art either. I started with woodcut prints. Painted to escape my death. Sewed and sculpted Art Dolls that take weeks to create. I love a process with many steps before I reach the final piece. There is a deeper connection to be attained between artist and art. I can disappear into a dreamworld and then I can express my soul. Can't imagine not having my art speak to me and teach me. I don't want to be its master. I want forever to stay its student.
Sometimes I felt I was lost in the journey, but now I know that my truth was being found. I feel like it all makes sense. I am even making sense of that trip I took in corporate Amerika . . .

If I am anything it is thrifty. I hardly ever buy anything new. All my furniture belonged to someone else. I use to love shopping for what was considered retro. I suppose my style would be post modern eclectic. Clean lines with minimal bedazzle (dust collects in the dazzle). I have started thinking that it would be nice to buy something brand new, so what I am dreaming about is this bed.I spied this at CSN Stores

New Work in Progress

Not exactly sure what this will be titled, but it represents three layers of me.

I made a batik for the background and again the forms are made of paper mache pulp. The faces were all pulled from the same mold, but because they have been shaded differently they all have their own persona.

I am trying to add more color to my work and well you know how much I love orange, so this is where I start. I am making lots of bluish clay flowers to add to the piece.

For the past week I have been involved with the e-course "Flying Lessons" with Kelly Rae Roberts along with many others interesting and creative people. A bit spiritual as well as technical lessons. First day or so we explored our fears. We wrote them down and we all seemed to have many or the same fears. What struck me, is that fear is based on untruths. Assumptions we make about the future. Next time fear starts to open its mouth and spill some lies, I'm gonna tell it to shut up . . . I am hoping to replace this betrayer with with an undaunted confidante. Fear is a liar

'For Real Fridays' is a new way for me to show all of you who I am. Some Fridays could be pretty, some could be ugly . . . Today it is all about messy.

I live in an apartment above the garage. Just myself and my dog Moo. I suppose the whole place is my studio, but I keep the messes in 4 distinct places . . . Sometimes there is a trail that runs between.

This little space is for working in clay, paper mache and some painting. I have a complete understanding of how to work in this mess. Mostly what I don't use is on the floor. But everything on the table, I need . . . until I push it off the table . . .

The trail leads to my dyes and fabric stiffener. It is not a big space, but they all get along here . . . The floors suffer the most in my world. Between the dyes and my dog's toe nails, they will have to be redone, therefore I figure I can't make it any worse. I am sure my 'landlord' will one day say something . . . but my dad has a hard time walking up stairs, so I'm not stressing about it . . . am I a bad daughter? If I had to be careful and clean, my art would suffer . . .

One large step away is the drying table, along with my ever increasing collection of plaster moulds . . . I'm gonna build a wall one day out of all the moulds.

I live in the trees, amongst the squirrels and birds. Sometimes the sunrise can be blinding since the windows face East, but most of the day I have great natural lighting and a killer view.

This is the largest of the studio spaces and actually it is not so messy. I think it is because the mess is spread out more, so it looks organized. It was a screened porch that we finished into a room. I do all the sewing of the dolls in this room. It is where everything comes together and yes the floor is a mess in here too . . . I may be trying to be open and honest with this post, but I am too embarrassed to show the floors.

The mess does not consume the house. For the most part I am very neat . . . Now Moo is another story. He leaves a trail of fur to follow.

Relief in Progress

I've been making these new 'Relief Dolls' for a few months now. Paper mache is a very messy but wonderful medium to use. I get to reuse newsprint and telephone books, so I suppose that makes these pieces partly green. I begin with a clay model. The clay I use is 'Sculpey'. I never bake it, so I can keep using the same clay over and over. Once finished, a plaster mold is made.
My molds have been coming out beautifully. I then use vaseline as my release, although I would love to hear any other suggestions as to what I could switch to. Vaseline tends to leave a stain, but so far I like the imperfection of the stains.The mold is filled with the paper mache pulp. I usually apply three layers, allowing each layer to dry. After about 4 to 5 days I can pull the piece.The piece is rough and imperfect and I have to fill in some holes and do lots of sanding, but again, this is what I love and I am finding virtue in the flaw.Once sanded, I accentuate the features with a black water color pencil. I know this is totally different from the cloth Art Dolls I make, but my style is still present and lives on. I hope you all are liking these. They are allowing me far more ways to express my own deep emotional state.

For this vignette I learned how to make roses out of clay. The figure is paper mache which has been left natural except for the lips and around the eyes.The figure has been covered with strips of fabric to create her dress and her hair is made of floral wire covered in brown floral tape. The piece is 9"x18".
I've been told that my work is a bit too dark, so I thought a flower garden might brighten the depth of this darkness . . .

My second paper mach vignette is of a solitary woman in the landscape of night.Her appearance is very spirit like. A form without arms or legs, poised in the darkness of the night and in the darkness of herself . . .

The piece is 7"x16". It is a relief sculpture made from paper mache pulp, fabric and wood.

What to do With Half a Head

Well I could not make the kneeling thing happen with the doll. Just never could get it to look right.She came out looking more like a dancer. Which is fine. The mood is still one of inner strength.

So I am excited about the doors of color and pattern being opened to me. A chance to go beyond the conventional and experiment with everything.

In Tribute

After the death of Alexander McQueen, I have been mesmerized by his work. He is certainly an artist and a sculptor. He has inspired me to go beyond the level of the fabric, the level of the body, to create a depth that intrigues the viewer.

This dress and pose were inspired by a video of Bjork performing. I wanted the doll to be in a kneeling position to create a sense of gratitude.

Alexander McQueen 's work, takes you far beyond yourself. It puts you in a place of a fantasy where you get lost in all the layers and movement he creates. I find many similarities in our work. Granted he has taken it to another level, but it is the sculptural quality of his work that I relate to. In the past, my dolls have been more muted in their color palette, but now I am inspired to seek out bold patterns and color to work with.

My thoughts as I have been working on this doll have been about how I dream for doll making to be what my life is all about. No distractions, no noise to keep me from my passion. With Hair

So I decided against long flowing hair and did more of a classical swirl about her head.This is done using black twistie paper. I unwrapped the stuff and put a pipe cleaner inside, twisted it back up and wrapped it around a dowel for the swirly affect.Several pieces that started off at 16 inches were used. I then hot glued them to the head.

It created a very sculptural and elegant look, which is exactly what I want in this doll.

The skirt took 19 of these wavy pieces. The black boostier is a subtle elegant feature that really has an impact against the white skin.She has really made me feel wonderful as I have been working on her. This doll has been in me a long time.

She is attractive bald, but I am thinking wavy black hair.

Dark Elegance

Starting a new series of dolls based on the way someone described one of my dolls recently. 'Dark Elegance' were the words they used and it has always made me happy.The legs for this doll are made from river birch limbs. The gown needed a rigid frame, so I have mad a wire cage and shaped it so the gown will flow out to the side.

I dyed some 100% cotton gauze and stretched it over the frame. The fabric was then covered with fabric stiffener.I have made several pieces that I covered with the stiffener and scrunched up to make the ripple effect. With the steam iron I will be able to form these pieces into each other as they circle the body.

Anne Boleyn is a true historical figure. She married Henry VIII in 1533. Queen Anne gave birth to the future Queen of England, Elizabeth and just three years later Anne Boleyn was found guilty of adultery, treason and incest. Anne would lose her head in 1536. I had started this doll a couple of months ago and had to set her aside. I couldn't grasp the direction to take her.The only thing that worked on her was the bustier or corset that I had made. Her head did not even work. So she was sent to the closet . . .But with some encouraging words and a wine bottle to form the shape of the skirt, I have a new direction. What she seems to be telling me is she is the dominant force here and I will do what she wants, because she will not go back in to the closet. . . . Do I dare add a whip?

So here is the finished doll.I made his hair out of 18 gauge aluminum wire which I coiled up around a dowel.

The only way I could figure out how to attach the coils to the doll was by putting a big screw in his head. . . . Ouch that had to hurt!

I am making blue jeans for this guy to wear.

I have sewn his thighs to his butt, which is always a little tricky. Still have to make the bottom leg portion of the jeans. Hopefully I can accomplish some flaired jeans.
So after posting these pics I notice how dirty my cloth grid top has become. My mother can't stand this (she kind of only loaned it to me), but I can't do anything about it now. It hasn't hurt anything, and mom won't be wanting it back now . . .

He is a sitter

My new doll is inspired by a friend who likes to go and sit along Mobile Bay. Some days I am lucky enough to join him.If you notice, the legs are in two pieces. Makes it easier to pose and from past experience, much easier to stuff. The arms are my next decision. Not sure if he will lean or hold on to the knees or both.

"Winter Chills - 1"

This doll is ready for the chill of winter with his top hat and scarf.The head is constructed out of four pieces, this allows me more room for stuffing. This is also the first time I put the skin fabric on in 2 halves. A front and a back.

This gave me a finished back to the doll's head.
I am planning to put 'Winter Chills - 1' on an Ebay auction soon. So hopefully you all will want him for Christmas.

So I have this friend with the perfect curve about her nose. This new series, I call 'Winter Chills', all have this exaggerated feature.The eyes on these guys have only half the needlesculpting. This face took me a while to become happy with. There are half a dozen one eyed doll heads laying around. What do I do with them?Oh and look, these guys have ears. I am trying to create a winter theme for this series, and using a 'less is more' approach on them. I really like the faces and the eyes are just right.

Lost and Found

While doing some therapeutic cleaning, I found this doll hiding behind a curtain. Not sure why I hid him because he is really a wonderfully funny guy. He is one of my original first attempts at making a doll.And yes I think he is making that 'farting' noise with his hand.He has inspired me to work in a new style of doll. My next spooky doll head's name is "Cursalot I"I again used twistie paper for the hair. All the paper is cut and unwrapped. Some pieces I put a wire in the middle to create a tight curl, while others I just wrapped back around a dowel to create the curl.The pieces are folded in half and then I glue them to the head.

With a few pieces on the head I tacked the ends back into the head area to create a fullness.Added a few bangs to soften the face.She did end up with lots of hair, maybe on the big side for spooky.But I love her. She is the perfect

With this doll I was really trying hard for spooky.I used white gauze for the skin instead of the tea dyed I usually glue on. I also anchored the thread for the mouth much lower on the head and now I have gotten rid of that happy grin, the happier dolls have.

Her hair is dyed crochet thread, tied into bundles and sewn onto the head.
I sew in a couple of bundles in a circular pattern to build up the back side of the head and so the fabric underneath will not show through.
"Cursalot II" still has to get a haircut. I am just not ready to do that yet.

Top Hat and Blonde Hair

This is the 6th of the doll heads. Her hair is made from twistie paper.I unwrap the twistie paper and then wrap it around a dowel.

I wrap some paper around the back of the head to keep any flesh color from showing through. The first few pieces are short and folded in half or made into a loop to act as the under layer for the longer pieces.

All the paper is hot glued on to the head.After the paper is glued on to the head I will do some more twisting and some pieces will get glued to others to produce a more put together do.She is a blonde haired beauty. Waiting for her finishing touches.

Blue Hair

Growing blue hair this time.

Again I start with the eyelash yarn. I make several bundles that I sew into the skull cap.I keep sewing these bundles until I have a full head of hair. I think it was about 8 bundles.Then I cover the exposed face and neck with plastic wrap, and brush fabric stiffener onto the yarn.She is not looking so hot right now, but in a few hours the hair will be dry and I can fluff it out with a steam iron and cut and style this new doll's hair. And then she will be beautiful. . . . . . .

These dolls are in many ways like sculptural portraits. The whole personality will be found above the shoulders. I love doing these small pieces I think because the impact is within the space of the head. I can do so much and leave the rest to your imagination.This dolls hair is made of eyelash yarn. Very messy stuff, but it comes in so many colors so I will deal with all the purple left over on the floor.This hair is made of cotton yarn. I have never used this before, but it should soak up the stiffener well since it is cotton. We shall see.To finish these dolls, they will get a collar and some sort of neck tie or scarf, and of course they are all getting hats . . . . . .

Something about gripping a pencil in one hand and a doll head in the other makes my elbow ache. So I need a break. I drew the faces on 4 of the 6 today. I have the pieces to their hats forming in the molds. I need to put the hair on the dolls first so I will know how large an opening I will need for the hats. Pretty excited to get to work on these guys or girls. I never know what I am making until the end. . . . .Funny how at this stage they all seem to look alike, a little variation with the eye color and they all have a slightly different shaped face. The hair is where the individual personality of the doll reveals itself . . . .

I've really enjoyed making the small heads again. I am so happy with the softness the non sculpted nose has produced in my dolls. The photo above shows the heads before and after the needlesculpting and before they get stiffened.

Can you see why doll making makes me so happy? The evolution between the faceless and the expression is the journey that I love . . . . .

"Fancy" From the Past

As an artist I need to be inspired to create. Most times I have let the process inspire me to the next idea and action. With these 2 dolls I took inspiration from a movie "The Gangs of New York", the style of clothing from the last half of the 1800’s and a movement of the early 1900’s, "Steampunk"
As I was in the finishing stages of these dolls I realized how much they reflect the theatrical element that costumes the performers of the circus. Not that I know the history of the circus, but I am assuming much of this is because the time period is the same.

I really think these are the best dolls I have made so far. They flowed in their creation and I gained a pattern for a pair of pants that I will continue to use and I can now make great hats. I am very happy with these guys. They are everything I was inspired to make.

A Bit of Color for the Boys. . . . . .

I love stretch knit fabrics and stripes of course make them all the better. I wish I had better places to shop around town for such fabrics, but no. I chance upon all my fabrics and then I buy yards of the stuff.
I tend to score the best stuff at thrift stores. Other people's useless things become quite cherished by me and my dolls.For this second doll I made a vest out of an orange/pink print. It has taken me a couple of days to fall in love with the whole look, but now I think it is perfect. Not just any doll could pull this outfit off.

I am always amazed at the creations I come up with. Didn't think boy dolls could be so fancy, but I guess I was wrong. . . . . . . . . .

Making a Doll for the Hat

About 15 years ago I took a costuming class with the drama department at a local university. The whole atmosphere was magical and inspiring. I had this idea to make a doll that was based around the top hat. I played with it but life got in my way and I got lost in others reality.
Ever heard the saying "if you love something let it go and if it comes back to you then it is yours"? Well look at what has come back to me. The doll with the top hat.These dolls are inspired by "Steampunk" and "Gangs of New York" and of course the Top Hat.This is the doll I wanted to make all those years ago. Actually he is better, because my skills have been developed over the years of doll making. This is the doll, where I finally realize that old dream.

How To Make a Hat . . . .

This is how I make a top hat.

My first step is to dye some 100% cotton batting the color I want. I found a plastic tapered cup to serve as my mold. The cup has been covered with plastic wrap and vaseline so the batting will release. I cut a piece of batting and cover it with fabric stiffener. I then wrap this around the cup. I set the cup on top of a jar so the fabric will dry. I also cover extra batting with the fabric stiffener so I have fabric for my brim.

Before step 5, I have removed the dried fabric from the cup and cut the excess off. I place this tube inside the cup and set it in front of a fan so the inside will dry more. In step 5, I would like you to disregard what the top of the hat looks like, I decided it worked better if I did not keep this folded over fabric, so I trimmed it off. The 5th step is to cut slits around the bottom of the tube. I cut about half inch slits all the way around. I then put a steam iron to this area so I could bend these pieces up easily without breaking them. In step 6 I have cut 2 pieces of the extra stiffened batting into circles. These will become the brim of the hat. A center hole is cut in both and the first circle is slid over the flaps and glued down. The 2nd piece covers the flaps on the bottom. It is glued also.

For step 9 I have cut another circle and then cut flaps to what the size of the hole is on the top of the hat. Once the flaps are folded down this piece will fit inside the hat and be glued in. Which is step 10. Step 11 I have cut a piece of batting that has not been stiffened. This will get covered with the fabric stiffener.

In Step 13 the fabric is laid on top to the hat and trimmed slightly and I press it down around the edge. Step 14. Once it dries, this piece is trimmed to the edge of the hat and is the final piece that finishes the top edge of the hat.

The size of the hat is determined by the size of the cup or glass used as the mold. Remember though the opening to the mold has to be able to fit over your dolls head. One can always make the tube smaller by cutting it up the side and then you can adjust the size and glue it. I hope this makes sense and feel free to question any thing and I will try to explain better.

I think this is a great hat and of course one can add all sorts of finishing touches to it. It can even be painted if dyeing is not your thing.

These two fellows will be dressed in their best. I really love making these hats, especially since I figured out how to make them. Figured it out all on my own. Granted I cut some pieces wrong, but I have ended up with a great hat. I would explain how I made these, but I did not take pictures of my progress. I will do this though on the next hat I make. . .

Summer Fun in the Pool . . . . . . . .

Here she is, all finished and taking a dip in the pool.So I am happy she is done. I spent so much time on this doll and I honestly was beginning to lose interest. But she came out great. This might be my the only doll I ever cover with paper clay. I think the whole process was a great success, but it isn't the way I love making dolls. Here is to all you doll artists who use clay and such. I return your medium back to you.She is a pretty redhead. . . . . . .So back to making dolls my way. I already started with a top hat and we shall see what kind of doll will wear it. . . . . Maybe a man.

Sorry for the peek, but I wanted to show the layer of paper clay that has been added. I first made a t-shirt of sorts to make a fabric layer and then I have put 2 layers of paper clay on.
I will then sand and paint. Then her bathing suit can be sewn together at the shoulders.I changed her blue eyes to green. One can do that these days with contacts. They are a beautiful "Sea Serpent Green".She is coming along slowly because of my J.O.B., won't say anymore, because I am blessed to have a job. . . . . . . . .

Another Redhead

I have always had something for redheads. LOVE em.

This doll's hair is made of dyed fabric that has been cut into 20" to 24" strips that are 1-3/4" wide. The strips are sewed into tubes and turned. I then sew a thread through to make the accordion folds. I really like this look. It makes a full head of hair with a little less fabric.I have got lots of work to do on the blow up pool, paper mache is a little lumpy, so I have to work at smoothing to get a finished look.

So far this doll is full of challenges. I am not that great at painting eyes and I am not sure if she will keep the blue eyes or I will change them to green. I am totally happy with the overall look. The blow up pool and sea monster floatie still makes me laugh.

Bad Tan

I added some batting to smooth out the curves of her hips. One layer of the synthetic stuff and a covering of the cotton batting. I find the fake stuff is best at filling in and the cotton is the best at covering and making a smooth rounded shape.

Now the doll is getting her personality. The swimsuit took a couple of mistakes to get the right fit, but I think it is perfect. My girl is a bit modest and maybe old fashion, but FUN and relaxing in the pool is her thing. Yep, that is going to be a blow up pool. My plan is to do this out of a tin can and cover this with paper mache to get the shape. Should be very messy. . . . . The real time consuming work is about to start with the paper clay. I have to fill in all the gaps and try to achieve the body that she deserves. Oh yeah, and that tan. I painted her face too soon. I have to have all my flesh surfaces ready to paint, all at one time, if I want my color the same all over. So this is just a bad tan from the bottle.

Sea Monsters

Everyone needs a flotation device when swimming.

My girl's little sea monster reminds me of the one I had as a child. I think mine might have been a seal, but he kept me floating without effort for a couple of summers. Then of course by 16 we should all let go and learn how to swim on our own.Trying to get a little more shapely leg. I have been adding layers of cotton batting that has the fabric stiffener brushed over it. Once this dries and I get the shape I want I will cover with paperclay. Her arms and hands are drying now, so I will probably finish the sea monster and make more orange hair.

So far not too many do overs . . . . . .

Swimsuit Time

It is hot and summer is here in Alabama. Time to get the swimwear and pool ready! In honor of this I have challenged myself to try some new ways to make this next doll. She will be a bathing beauty. All my other dolls have been fully clothed, but since I might be the only one who would go swimming in a long sleeve shirt and long pants, I have to figure out a way to show some flesh.I am trying to work with paper clay to achieve the bare skin. I am not sure if I can pull this off, but I am willing to let you all watch my success or well . . . . . . .

Where Are My Shoes?

Yes, I know she has no feet. Would it surprise you if I confessed to not making feet? I just put shoes on the end of the legs. "She don't need no stinking feet."She just needs all of her shoes. That is what I am working on. Painting colorful shoes. This point where I am almost finished, is some what bittersweet for me. This doll has put me in such a good place as I worked on her. A long hard day at the J.O.B. would end and I could let it all go by just working on her. She was just what I needed this past couple of weeks. . . . . . . . Much Love for her.

I am in love with this doll. She has such a soft face and I think it is because the nose has not been needlesculpted.
I think this was a great decision and might become a signature for my future dolls. . . . . . .Still much work to do on the shoes. I have to sew the arms on to body and then sew the head on, then do some finishing touches with a collar and the other stuff that will come to mind as she is talking to me.

It is as exciting as watching hair grow. . . . . . .I have been trying to grow my hair back out long from a very short cut. I really am at the point where I want to cut it all back off. Can't stand this mess that sits on my head now. . . . But this is not about me and my hair. . . . . . . .
This is the top of the head. After I work on the front and find the style, I sew from the bottom up and around back to the top. This way I get a layered look. This hair can be squished, but you can't cut it.
The head is pretty close to being finished. . . . . . . . She probably has the prettiest face I have made yet, but lets not share that with the other dolls.

Here we have the first growth of hair. Love it!This is a good angle to explain my skull cap concept. With a stiffened head it is impossible to sew in to. Too hard. I make a skull cap out of a double layer of t-shirt fabric, sew it in an oval shape, turn it and stuff it with polyfill. I then glue it to the head. Now I can sew all the hair on. The pile of lavender fabric strips were sewn in to tubes. The tubes were turned and a pipe cleaner is inserted. I gather the fabric along the tube and do a little twisting and bending in half to create my hair pieces.

I love what I get to do. . . . . .I am driven to challenge myself. To constantly differ my style with every doll. Maybe just a little tweek that nobody else might see. Maybe this is not a smart idea. You guys tell me. Can you see something consistent and distinct about my work that identifies it as mine?

Another beautiful bald headed doll. The pile of lavender fabric strips will be her hair. This will take me some time, since my work schedule is heavy, but if I can put an hour in everyday, I will make slow progress. . . . . .
Not sure if I want to put a vest on her. I am going to do one of my scarves which I love doing. We shall see what she wants once she has hair. The face is a very important phase of the doll, it reveals the emotion through the expression. This girl is wide eyed and cheerfully considering all her choices. What could be better than having so many shoes to choose from?

I added some cotton batting to smooth out the hip area. I also added a little bit of something to her chest, so we all know who SHE is.
I am making 7 shoes in all for the doll. She is someone who has given herself lots of choices to consider.
The shoes are made from paper mache. I use a mold that I made to keep the shoes consistent. It is also faster. Not that this is speedy, but it will do. Almost have them all together. They will then get sanded and painted.
She has no head. . . . .but she does have her outfit on. No more nakedness to show. . . . . I love this pose. Even without a head you can tell she has a particular attitude about herself.

Darkness Stage One

Here she is. "Darkness Stage One" is her title. I think she represents the dark time in a life's journey. Sometimes we live on the dark side or we feel lost or we seem to be in a constant struggle. We seem to be in a place where the light does not shine.

Time and time again, I find myself alone and seemingly at the far end of a dark tunnel. But because I have been here before, I know this is how life teaches us perseverance and humility.

She has a needlesculpted face, her hair is made of dyed twine that has been twisted. I am always surprised with the hairstyles I can execute. It is scary to start cutting into a weave that has taken hours to sew in. But I really like her asymmetrical style.
